He was turned into a crow and banished by the Chief Elder. Through a mishap, Arvensis becomes monstrous sized and with an army of crows at his disposal he appears to be indestructible.
Nothing threatens him - not the Lavaights, humans who live in a dormant volcano or the Newteleons, the huge lizards of the swamps, not even Cragga, the wood that lives and breathes evil. There is only one thing that can destroy him - a contract, should it ever be found and served on him by Lance it will cause him to die a terrible death.

Excerpt from the book:
'Miles? You must listen to me. Please hear me out!' Miles' sobs became quieter and broken. 'Your mind has been manipulated for so long by Arvensis. He had this planned from the day he rescued you. You don't seriously believe I could have killed our parents! Do you?' Miles became silent. Lance continued. 'Miles, we were babies! The children you have just attacked, some of them are our family! Eleanor's spirit saved me from Cragga. Do you think she would have if it were true? Arvensis killed them. He struck the Orbs and just took you, for his own means!' With that, Miles pounced, eyes ablaze and screaming, he pulled Lance's feet from under him, causing him to crash backwards to the floor. The cutlass flew out of his hand. Somersaulting, it embedded in the wooden boards by Lance's side. But Lance didn't grab hold of it. Miles leapt on top of him in a wild frenzy. Holding him down by the throat, with one hand and the strength of ten men, he grabbed hold of the cutlass and held it to the jugular vein, which was now protruding from Lance's neck. Gasping for air, Lance rasped, 'If Arvensis had been telling the truth, the contract would not have disintegrated him!' Miles hesitated. His eyes shifting as the words penetrated his mind. Frowning, his lips began to quiver and his whole body trembled. Releasing his grip on Lance's throat, he dropped the cutlass and fell limp, as a rag doll. Lance coughed and spluttered as Miles sat up and blubbered; 'Oh Lance, I want my parents! And my brother!' he then wept helplessly. Lance pulled himself onto his elbows and lifting his brother's face in his hand, caught a tear from his eye. 'This tear represents much pain. I swear to you Miles. No more shall be shed!' Miles shivered and sighed, as Lance pulled his head to his shoulder and hugged him. 'LANCE! LANCE!' yelled Jack, who along with Matt and Teasel, burst through the door. Lance looked up at them and smiled, reassuringly.
